If there were only 3 tips to remember to become a super urban Driver, it would probably be the following. Go and experiment it, if not yet tested. And to measure the impact of your consumption in town, you’ve got eiver. Read this tip to save fuel 😉
Take the ZEN side on the road
Have you counted the number of seconds you earn after a “bullet gun take off”, just before stopping at the next traffic lights? Have you been occasionally surprised to find next to you the biker you had overtaken 200 m earlier? And worse, see him keep on riding slowly and pass without stopping, because of the light coming from red to green. In short, this is just a good first eco-driving lesson if this situation is experimented on ourselves.
A soft, smooth and not aggressive driving helps to avoid overconsumption, especially in cities. Anticipating and calmly driving means less stress, less pollution and fuel economy.
Shift gears …. fast.
The speed limit in the cities (between 30 and 50 kph in main European cities) may reduce our ability to save fuel. hum, hum. Are you sure? Effectively if we remain on low-speed gear (1st, 2nd, 3rd) during our trip, it can actually overload the bill. With equal speed, the lower the gear, the higher is the engine speed. Remember a simple rule, if you exceed 2000 rpm/min (diesel) or 2400 rpm/min (gas), you burn too much fuel. Since we do not think about it often, and we often shift gears in town, we accumulate the risk of over-consuming fuel. Do not hesitate to engage the highest gear as soon as possible. When you shift gears, make sure that the rpm meter does not exceed the 2000/2400. This applies to all cars, even automatic transmissions (yes, you can also pace yourself on the right foot pedal).
Choose the gear level adapted to the speed at which you drive is an important factor in saving: Do not overrun engine can save up to 40% fuel in town?.
Turn the engine to “Pause”
And Last but not least, stop the engine when parked or queuing at the gas station, it’s a good habit to get into! But what is the rule? How long must we wait before shutting down the engine?
Contrary to what is often thought (especially because of what happened on older cars), today’s engines are more efficient then support successive shutdowns and restarts. We must adapt our behaviour to this new situation.
An engine which rotates unnecessarily consumes fuel, … unnecessarily. On the other hand, to cut the engine in the traffic is not recommended for security reasons. Do this only if you know how fast reboot or if your vehicle is equipped with a “start/stop”. So let’s avoid this practice for cases which may be less than 30 seconds. If you forget, eiver asks, beyond 2 minutes of immobilization, if your trip is complete. A good way to remember to turn off the engine if necessary.
Turn off the engine for short stops. For example, while waiting for your turn at the gas pump, or when you are waiting for someone, or when you find yourself in a log jam and all parameters indicate that “it will last.” When you turn on the engine, do not press the accelerator pedal. Fuel consumption of a modern engine at idle is about 0.7 litres per hour depending on the type of engine.
OLDER CARS.
Older cars with a carburettor fuel (usually manufactured before 1990) may consume more fuel at startup. In this case, in terms of energy efficiency, it is obviously not wise to turn off the engine for short stops.
Therefore, the motor must be cut in situations with no risk to road safety. Always keep in mind that energy efficiency should never take precedence over safety.
Happy driving with eiver!
