When we talk about vehicle maintenance, we often underestimate the importance of tires pressure. Yet, good tires, properly inflated, can help save up to 20% on a full tank of gas – with no effort by the motorist. Think about it when you drive out for vacation.

Tires are the only link with the road; their condition and braking capacity are key elements for your safety. But when more security means an economy, you have everything to gain.

The tires pressure

The pressure determines the compression of the tire, its progress on the roadway, and therefore facilitates the handling of the vehicle. It is then an essential component of the safety of the vehicle.

It is important to check the tire inflation pressure at least once a month with an accurate tire gauge. The over or under inflation of tires causes a decrease in adhesion which can be dangerous cornering or braking. The consequences of a bad pressure is faster tire wear, increased risk of bursting (especially in hot weather) and excessive fuel consumption of the vehicle.

Wear in the centre of the tread is characteristic of over-inflation, while wear on the sides is a sign of underinflation.

It is advisable to slightly over-inflate your tires when transporting heavy loads so that the tire folds at the edges. The inflation pressure is always to be cold checked on a tire that does not come from rolling. Rolling 1 km is enough to raise the pressure in the tire, and thus distorts the measurement. Continuous pressure loss can be a sign of a problem of fitting tires or wheel.

Another element to be checked: balancing. Improper tire balancing causes vibrations, which tire the driver and causes irregular tire wear and premature ageing of the suspensions. New tires should be balanced during assembly and after each repair.
