In France, there are two types of roundabouts. We tell you more about it.

THE TWO TYPES OF ROUNDABOUT IN FRANCE

On the first, the driver already on the roundabout has priority. The signs “give way” located at the “entrance” of the roundabout help to know.

On the second type, which tends to disappear, the special feature is that priority is given to the vehicle coming, from the right; rather it’s a place like the famous “Place de l’Étoile” in Paris. (A place which most drivers would rather avoid).

Now that the difference is made, how do we drive on these crossroads?

HOW TO TAKE A ROUNDABOUT ?

When approaching the roundabout, I brake, I move gears down, I keep the foot on the brake and I make the decision to enter – or not. It is at this point that it is necessary to be careful and pay attention to all types of drivers, vehicles, motorcycles or even bikes that are less visible!
Before committing, I must give way to the users already driving on the ring (roundabout). And, more importantly, it is France, drive on the right hand side of the road.

For the location within the roundabout, it depends on the exit I wish to take. Nothing better than an illustration to understand.
I never forget to take a quick look before taking an exit to avoid that another driver cut me off. WARNING ! The indicators are not a waste of time, they are indispensable!

Failure to comply with the traffic rules in a roundabout can be punished with a fine of 135 € and 3 demerit points on the driver’s license. Knowing that the driving license exam takes into account how to drive in a roundabout, that’s a common driving technique.

Anticipate the type of roundabout, follow our advices, and you will know how to drive in a roundabout !
