This is an old reflex that dates back when car engines played a pleasant and harmonious music. Today an engine idling (or an engine running) is neither nice to hear nor good to breath. Stop it as soon as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n

THE CONSEQUENCES OF KEEPING YOUR ENGINE RUNNING<\/h3>\n

There was a time, not so far, where we let our worship engine operation, even at a standstill. Small winter mornings, the justification was “it is to heat.” Large summer evenings, another excuse: “It is for the air conditioning …” in a traffic jam: “I will restart immediately.” A parking lot: “I’m waiting for someone”, etc, etc …<\/p>\n

When you’re stopped, your engine must be switched off<\/a> as soon as possible. Even for a 30 second break. Nothing justifies today to keep engine idling at a standstill for prolonged periods. what for?<\/p>\n

First, for ecological reasons. A car engine running highly polluting and rejects not only CO2 as everywhere, but also particles and rare and harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (for a poorly tuned engine) or nitrogen oxide (NOX), which will disturb or worse, pedestrians or cyclists who pass nearby. And this advice also applies when you wait at a red light. Vehicle emits 20 times more greenhouse gas emissions at a red light that when traveling at a speed of 50 kph.<\/p>\n

Then for economic reasons: engine running unnecessarily for more than 60 seconds uses more fuel than when it shuts down and restarts. for example a trip into town for 15 km : you’ll stop on average 0.4 times per km.
